Exploring Various Types of Treatment for Addiction

Wellness Retreat on May 15, 2018

What do you think about when you hear the words “treatment for addiction”? What images come to mind? Maybe you think about a group of people saying, “Hi, my name is such-and-such. And, I’ve struggled with alcoholism.” Or, perhaps you picture a person sitting in an office, speaking to a therapist about addiction. Well, both of these are types of treatment for addiction. There are several different ways to address and stop the addictions that people are dealing with. And, each method presents its own advantages.

Some Types of Treatment for Addiction

There are so many different causes of addiction. Some people have developed an addiction after becoming dependent on pain medication. Others may have had traumatic experiences which caused them to use a strong substance as a way of escape. Perhaps they began to drink or use heroin to get high. Many individuals began to suffer from addiction when they were going through a period of grief or depression. Since causes of addiction vary, approaches to treatment also vary. Here are some different types of treatment for addiction:

Detox is often the first step in any kind of treatment process. It is very dangerous to go “cold turkey” when it comes to drug or alcohol use. To simply stop using a substance can cause severe withdrawal symptoms. This can be very harmful or even deadly. So, a medically supervised detox can help to ensure that the person is safely ending use. During the detox process, the patient is able to receive treatment that reduces the unpleasant effects of withdrawal. Some detoxes will use medications like Suboxone to help prevent relapse and withdrawal discomfort.

Individual therapy is sort of like the image of the patient and therapist. This is one of the more well-known types of treatment for addiction. When a person is involved in individual therapy for drug or alcohol dependence, he or she is paired with a professional counselor. During therapy sessions, the patient will discuss their feelings and issues. A licensed counselor or therapist will provide guidance and advice. These sessions allow the client to find out more about how to manage stress, discover triggers, and avoid relapse. This kind of therapy also helps the patient to develop healthier thought patterns and emotional responses.

Family therapy is one of the types of treatment for addiction that allows the patient’s family to be involved. Addiction harms both the individual and his or loved ones. So, family therapy seeks to bring healing to each person impacted by the substance abuse problem. Therapists help the families to establish healthy ways of communication. It also enables family members to learn more about how to help their loved one.

Group therapy is a way for people to feel more a part of a community. Addiction has a way of creating distance between the individual and other people, between reality and the world of drugs and alcohol. Group therapy sessions involve groups of people in recovery and therapists. This style of treatment lets people talk about their struggles with people who understand. It also allows people to share their successes and promotes accountability.
