How It Works & When to Get Help

Wellness Retreat Recovery Center provides the full continuum of addiction recovery services to help individuals overcome substance use disorder. Ours is a rehab that allows phones under certain conditions. The WRRC policy states that after a waiting period has been satisfied, clients are able to access their cell phones during designated times. Meanwhile, a house phone is provided for client use during the waiting period.

Are Cell Phones Permitted at Rehab?

Residential treatment centers have clear policies in place regarding the use of cell phones during a client’s stay. Each rehab has their own guidelines pertaining to the limited use or prohibition of cell phones. The policy is established in order to create a supportive treatment environment that reduces both distractions and possible problems.

The majority of addiction rehabs restrict use of cell phones for at least a period of weeks, if not completely. The primary reason for not permitting cell phone use is to reduce distractions so the individual can focus entirely on the recovery process. Rehabs that do not allow cell phones encourage clients to write letters to their close family members or friends. Outside of that, clients can utilize the house phones when needed.

Why Cell Phone Use is Restricted at Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers

It isn’t hard to understand why someone entering rehab may balk at the thought of turning in their cell phone. During the stay in treatment, the individual’s phone is stored securely for them.

As a society, we have become highly dependent on our phones throughout the day. Our phones are the device that connects us – for communicating, shopping, accessing search engines, and spending time on social media. It is hard to imagine losing access to our phone for an extended period.

When seeking treatment for a substance abuse problem, the phone can become a detriment and a distraction. Addiction treatment requires a person’s full attention and commitment, and the phone becomes an obstacle to that.

Here are the primary reasons why there are very few rehabs that allow phones:

  • Distracts individuals from focusing on their recovery process
  • Can be used to connect with drug dealers, which can endanger other clients
  • May be a source of temptation that triggers cravings or a relapse
  • Disrupts bonding with peers in the recovery setting

Having Limited Access to Phone and Electronics at Rehab

Wellness Retreat Recovery Center is a rehab that allows phones in a supervised and restricted manner following a waiting period. Our policy is based upon the premise that detox and treatment require a client’s full attention.

Only by paying attention is the individual able to absorb all that they are being taught. If the client constantly checks their phone, texts, or scrolls social media, they can’t learn or retain new recovery tools.

Communication Options in Rehabs that Limit or Prevent Cell Phone Use

The cell phone is the tool by which most of us stay connected to friends and family members. When entering treatment, losing that mode of contact can cause a great deal of anxiety and a sense of isolation. However, there are other ways to stay connected to others while in staying at a rehab that allows phones only sparingly:

  1. House Phone. All rehabs provide a landline phone that is available for client use. The house phone allows clients to reach out to family if needed, although the call will be supervised.

  1. Family Participation. Most addiction treatment programs offer a family track, which includes family group therapy sessions or family events. This gives clients the opportunity to see their family members while in treatment.

  1. Writing Letters. When you enroll in a recovery program, you will be encouraged to bring paper, pen, stamps, and addresses. Clients can send and receive letters, allowing them to remain connected while at rehab.

  1. Group Therapy Sessions. Peer support is highly encouraged at drug and alcohol treatment centers. Group sessions, under the guidance of a counselor, feature peers in recovery gathering to share their stories and bond.

Group Activities. Another way to stave off loneliness when not having access to a phone is to participate in various group activities. These may include outdoor sports, yoga classes, art therapy sessions, backyard barbeques, and pool time.

Why Rehab Requires Your Full Attention

Even rehabs that allow phones on a limited basis emphasize the need to invest all your attention in the recovery process. Drug or alcohol detox and treatment engages your mind, body, and spirit, and therefore demands your total attention.

There is much to learn during the time spent in treatment, requiring individuals to be fully focused and engaged. Treatment elements are designed to induce lasting changes in behaviors and thought patterns, which lead to long-term recovery outcomes.

Here is how you will spend much of your time in rehab:

Detox: The detox and withdrawal process takes 1-2 weeks to complete. The withdrawal symptoms range from mild to severe, determined by the type of substance and the scope of the addiction. Medications and mental health support are provided to help ease the effects of detox.

Psychotherapy. Using evidence-based therapies like CBT or DBT, you are guided toward making constructive changes in the way you respond to triggers. In these private psychotherapy sessions, you are also free to discuss any mental health concerns you may have.

Group therapy: Meeting in small groups provides a safe setting for peers in treatment to get to know each other. Group sessions are all about sharing and learning from each other, as well as from the clinician leading the group.

Family-focused sessions. Family members play an important role in your recovery journey. Family therapy helps family members learn to set boundaries, while teaching better communication skills.

Education. Classes provide clients with helpful information about the affects that drugs and alcohol have on the brain. You will also learn new coping skills to help you avoid a relapse.

Complementary activities. To enhance the effects of therapy, clients engage in experiential activities like art therapy, equine therapy, meditation, and dance movement.

Aftercare. Aftercare actions help sustain sobriety after you complete the rehab program. These may include outpatient programs, sober living, alumni events, and 12-step or similar recovery meetings.
